ILMN: Billionaire Yuri Milner and Illumina

The first human genome required $3 billion and 13 years to sequence. Ten years later, that time has fallen to about 24 hours. It’s now possible to take a blood test and meet with your doctor a week or two later to go over your inherited strengths and weaknesses on an iPad

Last week, Illumina (ILMN) , the top seller of gene sequencing machines, announced a deal in tandem with Yuri Milner, the billionaire Russian investor behind Facebook (FB), Twitter (TWTR), and many other Web companies

Step aside Elon Musk and King Carl Icahn, here comes Yuri.

First ILMN is the company that makes most of the Gene Sequencing machines used in DNA analysis for medical health purposes. ILMN startled the medical world by coming out with a gene genome process for $1,000 per test , which cost upwards of over 10,000 previously. This means that gene sequencing has gone mainstream.  ILMN makes money...it bought in 1.6 billion last year and it's just getting started.

Yuri Milner has a background in Physics and internet investing. He has been behind Facebook FB and Twitter TWTR and is considered the most successful investor in social media.  Now, it appears, he  is focusing on life science projects such as ILMN.

ILMN has the potential to be a 'home run' company and 'home run' stock.
ILMN was priced per share at 110.59 on 12/31/2013. It is now 171.37. I am adding it to my year end forecasts (see further in this blog) at a conservative 295 per share.

I said at the onset that I was interested in investing in companies  that make the world a better place to live. That's why you won't see stocks here like MGM or PM.  GILD cured HepC,  With PCYC leukemia is not a death sentence. REGN working on a near cure for Ashma. Now ILMN brings gene sequencing to the mainstream to determine health concerns and needs

Winning is grabbing momentum, profiting from it and then releasing it

A winner must be willing to  embrace change and  welcome challenge. The biggest “fear,” if there is  one, is not of the unknown, but of becoming complacent and stagnant. An environment of change and even uncertainty can energize a mentally strong person and bring out their best.

A winner is willing to take calculated risks. This is a different thing entirely than jumping headlong into foolish risks. But with mental strength, an individual can weigh the risks and benefits thoroughly, and will fully assess the potential downsides and even the worst-case scenarios before they take action

The Daily Log

Friday, Mar 7

ILMN year end forecast was added to my list, which now consists of 12 stocks. The others were added during the first part of January. Already two of the stocks have  made my projections. Another, FB,  is very close.

9:08  Got 25 more shares of ILMN at fire sale prices.

Thursday, mar 6 leftovers
Stocks I'm carefully watching to purchase : NFLX and AMZN and HOT

8:31am cst  Bought 3 more shrs of PCLN at 1371.23.

10:58am cst Bought back our friend, the bully BIDU.

11:00am cst Bought back ole core friend, Netflix NFLX.

11:04am cst  CMG pushing hard to get to 600 !

11:10am cst   Took a brand new position on P (Pandora).

11:18am cst  Sold CERN. I like CERN long term but I plan to use the sold funds for better near term opportunities.

11:19am   TSLA continues to show 'no quit'.

11:20am I am consistently on the onlook for 'home rum' stocks. In 2013, TSLA became a 'home run'. This year, candidates FB and P appear to be 'home runs'. Actually FB and P were 'home runs' in 2013 but I did not buy into them until 2014.

11:42am cst Actually wanted a total investment of around 10k in NFLX. Had to pay a little more , 455.40 and bought 8 additional shares.

I feel good about today's selections. I think ILMN is a home run stock.

Regarding the Catching Fire portfolio. My real account in part mimics most but not all  of the same stocks at different buying prices and different quantities.

 ,

Are you going after the big fish?
This site isn't all about the stock market. However, with the daily updating of the stock market, it took most of my time. I am still going to discuss  the stock market but also  going to relate more to other parts of this site - such as the paintings, my hobbies such as estate sale treasure hunting, movies, autos, etc.
I have developed a good following if the Blogger statistics I get are correct. It will be interesting to see how they change in the coming months. As stated, I will start a new public stock market portfolio. There's so technical issues to work out. One being displaying Options.

Catching Fire started during thanksgiving week, Nov 2013
